Latest newsletter describes findings from three recent BB-REG-NET studies examining key challenges facing the bio-based materials sector.

Our research on biodegradable plastics and littering behaviour found that material properties have minimal influence on littering decisions – contradicting assumptions that have influenced UK policy development. The study suggests that convenience and situational factors are the primary drivers of littering, rather than whether materials are biodegradable.

The Bio-Barometer Survey results highlight significant barriers preventing UK bio-based companies from scaling successfully. While the UK demonstrates strong research capabilities, regulatory challenges and limited domestic support are causing high-potential businesses to seek growth opportunities abroad. Our analysis of scaling challenges shows that only 24% of UK bio-based companies operate internationally, yet these generate nearly double the revenue of domestic-only firms.

The edition also provides details about the upcoming workshop in York on 1st July, focusing on regulatory environments for bio-based materials, including sessions on life cycle assessments, public procurement, and eco-labelling.
